Managing a Blog

Blog URL’s

There are three types of blog domains that can be used to make your blog successful.

www.companyname.com/blog

This option allows you to continuously add content to your website the way that Google wants you to. Google likes this option, but Sean thinks differently.

blog.companyname.com

This option creates a subdomain. This used to be the best way to do it, but Google has changed. This is the least appealing approach.

www.companynameblog.com

This option puts your blog on a completely separate domain. This means that your blog can stand-alone. This is the option that Sean recommends.  The negative thing about this option is that your primary website does not gain SEO value from your blog, but it allows you to drive live links to your primary website.

Blogging Software

There are handfuls of blogging platforms that you could use for your Blog. There are only four that are really worth the time and effort:

blogger•    Blogger

A good platform for people who want a little of everything rather than a focus on the extremes

tumblr•    Tumblr

This is the easiest platform to use for blogging, but is the least trusted by Google—so you have to work a little harder to get it ranked.

ning•    Ning

This platform isn’t necessarily a blogging site, but it’s the easiest way to do collaborative blogging with people in the community or industry that you’re working in.

wordpress•    Wordpress

The most robust, contains the most plugins, themes, and customizations, and is the most search friendly.

Topics

Everyone is a blogger waiting to happen! Here are a few topics that businesses could blog about:

•    Industry innovations

•    Special products or services

•    Community events

•    Local charities

•    Local schools

•    Individual customers

•    Employee spotlights

•    Tips to help people use your products or services

•    Reasons why people should use your products

•    Anything that you like! (Though, this is debatable.)
