Websites are constantly changing, and new trends and popular sites come and go faster than you can imagine, specifically social media platforms. In order to have a successful social media strategy, you need to focus your attention on the most popular and the most powerful sites. 

Facebook

Facebook is getting increasingly popular among adults. However, it was not always that way since its launch in February of 2004.  What was originally intended for college students has snowballed into so much more.  In the U.S 45.6% males use Facebook, 53.3% of females use Facebook and the main age demographic for people between the ages of 35-54.

 

Twitter

Twitter was founded March 21st,2006. The highest age groups interacting on the social networking site are users between the ages of 18-29 at a staggering 95 million people. Twitter is mostly male with over 60% of male users making up its user population.

 

YouTube

YouTube was originally developed by 3 of PayPal’s former employees in 2005 and bought out by Google in 2006. The site that is used to share videos with audiences has grown so much over the years. As of 2014 YouTube has 128.2 million users, 67% of people between the ages 18-34, 67.7 million females and 60.5 million males total.

SnapChat

SnapChat was started in 2011 by students at Stanford University in 2011. The demographic is most popular among the millennials. Snaps can last for up to 10 seconds and as of 2014 30% of Snaps were selfies(pictures one takes of one’s self). In fact, it is not most commonly used for businesses at all. 59.8% of users most commonly use it for sending senseless faces to friends.

 

Instagram

The site which allows photos to be shared with filters and hashtags is most popular among female users.83% of wealthy U.S teens are on the social networking site, and over half of Americans between the ages of 12-24 say they have an account. This has them beating out Facebook.

 

Pinterest

pinterestThe sharing tool that allows people to “pin” items they like onto boards is most popular in women. In fact as of 2014, 80% of users are women and only a mere 20% are men. Also, even though men account for 20%, 92% of pins are from woman. There are 70 million users worldwide and 79% of users who are active are from the U.S. with the primary age ranging from 30-49.

 

Vine

Designbolts-Vine-Vine-3Vine, owned by Twitter is a video platform, featuring short, 6-second videos. It allows users to record clips that loop, and give users the opportunity to “revine,” or share videos they like. Vines can be posted on the Vine platform, and shared through Twitter and Facebook. As of August 2013, Vine has 40 Million users, and in August 2014, 100 million people watched vine videos each month.

 

Flickr

Flickr_LogoFlickr is an image and video-hosting site created in 2004, and acquired by Yahoo in 2005. In addition to being a photo website, Flickr is also used by photo researches and bloggers to host images that they embed in their blogs and social media. In 2013, The Verge reported that Flickr had a total of 87 million members and more than 3.5 million images were uploaded daily.

 

Tumblr

Tumblr-iconTumblr is a microblogging and social media platform that lets you share anything you want including photos, text, videos, and more. Tumblr was founded in 2007, and as of December 2014, Tumblr has over 213 million blogs.

 

 

LinkedIn

linkedin-1412625598LinkedIn is a business social media-networking platform. The site was founded in 2002, and launched in 2003. The site is available in 20 languages, and as of 2013, LinkedIn had over 65 million month US visitors, and over 178 million visitors globally. In 2014, LinkedIn had over 330 million registered members.
